Hyderabad: Human waste including fat and body liquids from the Osmania General Hospital mortuary was found diverted into the general sewerage line. A fact finding committee visited the hospital recently and found that human fat had blocked the sewerage line. Further investigation revealed that large scale bio-medical waste is being disposed off in this manner which is against the hospital waste management regulations.

The fact finding team, during the visit to the hospital mortuary inquired into the manner the waste is disposed. Former Chief Scientist, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Mr Babu Rao, had a few shocking revelations to make regarding this.

“We found anatomy waste including linen used for post mortems, dumped in plastic bags lying outside a closed mortuary room. The body fluids from the mortuary room were flowing into the drain while human fat had clogged the sewer line. There was foul smell emitting from the place that the team could not bear for too long. We also found body fluid leaking out of the room. In fact, there was a pool of stagnant fluids and water outside the room. Body fluid was also found in a mound of mud next to the room. Outside the room were two big covers, stuffed with post mortem linen and anatomy waste.” The team had no gloves and were using a stick to open the covers. The hospital sewer line which carry human fat and fluids are connected to the general line. This is ultimately released into the Musi.
