Dengue haunts Koorachundu

Four deaths, 160 suspected cases.

Kozhikode: Koorachundu gram panchayat is in the grip of a panic with one more woman, Kaalangari Chettiyamthodi Haseena (27), succumbing to suspected dengue on Monday. According to the health department, dengue as the cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Till now, four deaths have been caused by dengue in the panchayat and more than 160 suspected cases have been reported. The meeting convened by the district administration at Koorachundu gram panchayat office on Wednesday decided to begin a cleaning drive from June 15. The panchayat members will lead the drive with the support of NGOs and volunteers to destroy all mosquito breeding sources by visiting each household. As many as 15 squads will be formed for the purpose.

District Collector U.V Jose extended all support for the drive. MP M.K Raghavan pointed out that laxity in cleaning the surroundings caused the alarming situation. District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr Ashadevi said that eradicating mosquito breeding sources was paramount. “Fogging is being carried out in the area.

Dengue spreading Aedis mosquitoes have been found in the folds of tarpaulin sheets and in the thrown away coco husks,” she said. The unused coconut husks in the rubber plantation should be placed upside down so water does not stagnate.

The Government Ayurveda hospital is providing lotions and coils to get rid of mosquitoes. The Homeo department will conduct a clinic on June 16. Besides, the services of an additional doctor has been made available at Koorachundu Community Health Centre. A 18-day special fever clinic will be held with the support of private hospitals. A Hi-tech Analyser is being set up at the clinic.

The Medilab Owners’ Association has offered support in checking blood samples. Balusserry block panchayat president V. Prathibha, Koorachundu gram panchayat president Vincy Thomas, NHRM Programme Manager Dr Bijoy among attended the meeting.
