GHMC refuses to fund Road Transport Corporation

A cash-strapped GHMC has stated its unwillingness to pay Rs 137.95 crore to the Road Transport Corporation.

Hyderabad: A cash-strapped GHMC has stated its unwillingness to pay Rs 137.95 crore to the Road Transport Corporation, that is deeply in the red, and has asked the state government to reconsider its decision of telling the GHMC to fund the RTC. As directed by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the government had asked the GHMC to release Rs 137.95 crore, the loss suffered by RTC for its city operations.

The RTC was an independent body before the Cabinet decided to hand over its city operations to the GHMC. GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said, “The government issued an order to pay Rs 137.95 crore to the RTC. The GHMC is overburdened with essential projects. We request the government to reconsider its decision as that amount can be used for important development works.”

GHMC’s expenditure, which includes establishments, health and sanitation, streetlights, city infrastructure maintenance, urban community development etc., amounts to Rs 1,969.38 crore for 2016-17. The corporation’s capital expenditure, including road infrastructure, amenities and services, slum-free Hyderabad project, public convenience, Green Hyderabad project, environment, heritage, culture and tourism, and the Smart Hyderabad project, amounts to Rs 3,630.62 crore.
