Cleaning drive in Kozhikode

Effort to check the spread of epidemics.

Kozhikode: The city corporation is on with a pre-monsoon cleaning drive in the city to check the spread of epidemics like cholera, malaria, dengue fever and leptospirosis. The origin of malaria was tracked to the places where migrant labourers lived. Though many efforts were made to provide health cards to migrants, it was not successful due to the large number of floating population.

Corporation standing committee (health) chairperson K.V. Baburaj told DC that a mega cleaning drive in all wards of the corporation will be launched on May 26.

The health standing committee has chalked out an action plan to check the outbreak of communicable diseases during monsoon with the cooperation of local self- government department.

"Funds have been set apart for the purpose covering all the 75 wards," said Mr Baburaj. In the last few years, the corporation had minimised the impact of diseases in the city, he said, adding that a massive cleaning drive was organized on May 11 and 12. "Now we are focussing on institutions," he said. A cleaning drive was conducted in the harbour on Tuesday. A project with Rs 1 crore was sanctioned for cleaning the drainages in the city by Urlaungal Labour Contract Society. A sum of Rs 69 lakh was sanctioned for ward-level cleaning, he said.

A health survey also was conducted to spot problem-prone zones in the city, he pointed out.

The committee has directed the ward councillors to convene a meeting of ward-level health sanitation and nutrition committee to implement the action plan.
