Tamil Nadu law minister says years of Amma efforts paid off

TN will respond to the Centre's draft when the case comes up next on Wednesday, he said.

Chennai: Amidst hue and cry from the Opposition on the status of Cauvery water row, the ruling AIADMK in the state on Monday said a conducive situation for the state over Cauvery dispute is shaping up. TN law minister C. V. Shanmugam told reporters outside the Supreme Court complex in Delhi that the state is happy that a situation has now been created—due to the consistent efforts of the Amma government for several years—for the farmers of TN to get their due share of Cauvery water. TN will respond to the Centre’s draft when the case comes up next on Wednesday, he said.

Expressing confidence that the TN’s riparian right over river Cauvery will be addressed by the Supreme Court during the next hearing, CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami said that the state was expecting a favourable verdict from the SC on May 16. He also said that it’s time for the Centre to set up Cauvery management board as per the earlier apex court order. It may be noted that Palaniswami on Sunday said that the Cauvery issue has reached a last stage where the state is awaiting for a final verdict in favour of Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam termed the Cauvery developments victory for TN. The state would go through the draft to ascertain the pros and cons in the draft filed by the centre and will subsequently file its counter, he said recalling that TN was legally restoring its right over cauvery due to the efforts taken by the late AIADMK leaders MGR and Jayalalithaa.
