Hyderabad: Rain gauges to prevent flooding
Hyderabad: The Greater Municipal Corporation has decided to install 150 telemetric rain gauges per ward at the cost of Rs 3 crore in the city. The telemetry rain gauge network apart from giving real time rain data every 15 minutes also gives out flood warning for effective disaster management in Hyderabad.
A part from this an SMS alert will be sent to the district collectors and other officials concerned in case of emergency. Telemetric rain gauges would update data on rain every 15-minutes and send SMS alerts. Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) would fund the purchase of the sophisticated rain gauges.
The telemetric rain gauges will be installed at 16 major nalas spread across the city. The parameters of the gauges will be fixed as per the capacity of the storm water drains in the respective areas so that they can shift residents to safer areas ahead of flooding.
This system has already been implemented in Karnataka, where Karnataka state natural disaster monitoring centre (KSNDMC) installed a network of telemetric rain gauges in some places in Bengaluru that are vulnerable to flooding. They give real time updates of rainfall and alert authorities whenever the amount of rainfall reaches danger levels to cause flooding.
