Calicut University to start centres for differently-abled

The special centers will make sure that free services are provided to people with cerebral palsy, autism, learning disability and other disabilities.

Kozhikode: Calicut University will set up separate centers for mentally-challenged people, said Vice-Chancellor Dr K.M. Mohammed Basheer. He was speaking after inaugurating the Physiotherapy National Art Gallery formed by the Community Disability Management and Rehabilitation Programme ( CDMRP) under the Social Justice Dept., Photo-Kerala Government and Calicut University’s psychology dept. and physiotherapy training group. This is one of the projects organised as part of the University’s Silver Jubilee.

CDMRP which was initially confined only on campuses are now in Kannur, Kozhikode and Malapuram districts offering services to the mentally-challenged. The special centers will make sure that free services are provided to people with cerebral palsy, autism, learning disability and other disabilities.

Departments of clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech language pathologist and audiologist and special educator work together. Community-based early intervention clinic, pragmatic social skill training, advanced autism clinic, advanced learning clinic, parenting mediated physiotherapy and other services will benefit the people, Vice-Chancellor said in a press conference.
