Bengaluru: What liquor ban! Drunk men ran riot
Bengaluru: The ban on liquor in the city for two days before the elections proved to be ineffective as many inebriated men were found roaming the city streets, creating nuisance on the night of the elections as it is alleged that many liquor shops opened before the midnight deadline.
The ban on the sale of liquor was in place in the city from 5 pm on May 10 till May 12 midnight. The ban will be again in force on Tuesday from 6 am to midnight to avoid any untoward incidents after the results are announced.
The state assembly elections went off peacefully, but there were many untoward incidents that went unreported. Residents from southern and southeastern parts complained to Deccan Chronicle that several men were found roaming the streets late into the night and creating nuisance. They said that some liquor stores started selling liquor before the midnight deadline.
A senior police official, however, claimed that there was tight security around the city and police personnel ensured that no liquor shop opened before midnight. “Minor incidents might have taken place in the city and if the residents had complained, we would have taken action,” he said.
