Kerala wary of ransomware

IT Mission issues advisories to public on precautions to be taken.

Thiruvananthapuram: Turning cautious over ransomware attacks across the world, the Kerala State IT Mission and police issued advisories to the public on the precautions to be taken to check the attack.

According to IT department sources, soon after the information regarding the ransomware attack came, the IT mission officials issued advisories to all department heads and also checked the networks.

“Though nothing adverse was noticed, the real impact will be known only by Monday. Since government officers were closed on this Saturday and Sunday, many computers in government offices will be switched on on Monday only. Only then can we confirm if the ransomware attacked our systems,” said an IT department officials.

The police Cyberdome of Kerala police also upped the ante following the cyber attack. Thiruvananthapuram-range IG Manoj Abraham, who is the nodal officer of the Cyberdome, said that the state police network was also not affected yet. He added that Cyberdome was vigilant against ransomwares for quite some time.

The police and IT Mission issued a set of advisories: Maintain updated Antivirus software on all systems; Enable strong spam filters; Scan all incoming and outgoing e-mails; Don’t open suspicious e-mails; Open e-mail attachments after ensuring veracity; Ensure authenticity of websites before sharing personal information.
