Imported prayer mats a big hit in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: With Ramzan round the corner, the demand for imported kaleens (carpet) has increased. This year, what’s trending is the chinar (Kashmiri leaf) design carpet. The carpets for flooring of mosques and also the one-metre-long Musallas for individual use are available in plenty.
Chinar is an exquisite collection of plush and profusely designed carpets that are available in textured patterns. The hand-woven designs to modern weaves in silk, nylon or polyster combined with wool reflect the elegance, skilled craft, and meticulous workmanship, said Md. Idrees Ahmed, a store owner.
“Most of the carpets are imported from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, Belgium and Kashmir. We are happy that the Kashmiri design carpets are being appreciated by many this year, as it has a complete feel-good factor. The design is simple and the chinar leaf drawn on the carpet is attracting many,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of handmade carpets, Md. Idrees noted, “These are always in demand. During the time of the Nizams, the prisoners in Warangal jail used to weave the carpets especially for Ramzan and they were in high demand. However, the demand reduced for handmade products because it took time for manufacture, and the payment by way of wages was huge.”
The demand for skull caps too has grown this year as the Old City market has accommodated various caps such as Omani caps, Turkey caps, Ajmeri caps, Rizvi caps, Haqqani caps etc.
These caps range from Rs 100 to Rs 500; and they are being preferred by many youths. Apart from following tradition, these caps are also a style statement, said a cap store owner.
