Hijack of medicine truck executed from Puzhal prison

Chennai: A murder suspect lodged in Puzhal prison allegedly executed the hijacking of a truck carrying 26 barrels of asthma medicines in broad daylight on May 4 near Sunguvachatram bypass on Bengaluru - Chennai road, Kancheepuram police said.
The police have arrested six persons, including the staff member of the drug company located in Ranipet. “We will be arresting Saravanan, of Vellore, now lodged in Puzhal prison in connection with a murder on Monday,” the police said.
The gang, travelled in a jeep and posing as government officials stopped the truck and hijacked it after attacking the driver and an armed security man accompanying him. Police said that the gang masterminded the heist as the drugs had narcotic value and thought that it would fetch them a huge price in the international grey market.
The arrested men were identified as Satheesh Kumar alias Mani (29) of Ranipet, working in the pharmaceutical company to which the drug belonged, Ganesan (35) of Tondiarpet, Ammanullah (31) of Padappai, Jayakumar (24) of Avadi, Palani (25) and Ravikumar (27) of Saidapet. Saravanan (35), the prime accused who is lodged in Puzhal is a friend of Satheesh Kumar, who is working in Malladi Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Ranipet.
The company was transporting the truck full of medicine from Ranipet to Chennai when the hijacking took place. Police said Satheeshkumar, who joined the firm 3 months back, took instructions from Saravanan in jail during his meetings to organise the gang to execute the hijack.
The particular medicine contained pseudoephedrine, a chemical frequently used in the manufacture of illicit narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, police disclosed.
