Annamalai varsity's surplus staff transferred

The move has been facing opposition from Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers Association.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government has transferred the 208 surplus staff in Annamalai University to government colleges on the basis of three-year contracts. The move has been facing opposition from Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers Association.

“The teachers in Annamalai University were appointed without following any rules. We don’t understand why the state government is very keen on protecting them,” said R.Damotharan, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers’ Association (TNGCTA).

The association had conducted a series of protests against the transfer of the surplus staff from Annamalai University to government colleges.

“The move to appointment these assistant professors to government colleges will affect rural students. Many of the faculty members do not have the required qualification,” he said.

The higher education department has transferred 369 surplus staff to government colleges last year.

The professors from government colleges are opposing the move saying it would affect the quality of education in government colleges and their seniority.

The government of Tamil Nadu took over the administration of the Annamalai University in 2013 after financial and administrative irregularities were found in the university.

At present, the state has 87 government arts and science colleges and nearly 6,000 teaching faculty are working in these colleges.
