Rs 160 crore for MNJ Cancer Hospital renovation in Hyderabad

At present, attendants accompanying patients are facing several hardships due to lack of proper accommodation.

Hyderabad: The state-run MNJ Cancer Hospital in the city will be modernised at a cost of Rs 160 crore.

At a board meeting of the hospital chaired by health minister C. Laxma Reddy on Saturday, it was decided to build a new oncology block with Rs 10 crore, and golden jubilee block with Rs 8.50 crore and also increase the beds in the hospital from 250 to 400. It was also decided to take up breast cancer screening programmes in all districts.

Mr Laxma Reddy said the funds would be utilised to purchase new state-of-the-art equipment besides upgrading the existing equipment and creating better infrastructure facilities in the hospital.

At present, attendants accompanying patients are facing several hardships due to lack of proper accommodation. “A new block for providing accommodation to attendants will be built with an expenditure of Rs 1 crore. Another Rs 90 lakh will be spent to modernise the kitchen and dhobi ghat in the hospital premises,” Mr Reddy added.

The board has also decided to appoint new professors, associate professors. With breast cancer cases among women on the rise in Telangana, it was decided to take up breast cancer screening programmes in all districts for early detection and treatment.
