Slum clearance board told to remove encroachments in Tondiarpet
Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board to remove all encroachments in the tenement of the board in Tondiarpet with police protection within 12 weeks.
A division bench comprising Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and P. Rajamanickam gave the directive on a petition filed by S. Thirunanasambanda Murthy, one among the residents of the tenement, which sought a direction to remove unlawful construction put up by another resident S. Mahalakshmi in the vacant space left open for common use.
When the case came up for hearing, the TNSCB submitted that the original allottees for tenement were Lalitha and Govindan. The petitioner and Mahalakshmi have purchased the properties without any permission from the board. Both the petitioner and Mahalakshmi have encroached upon the open spaces and have put up superstructures.
Mahalakshmi was constructing an additional staircase on the western side of the block which was being objected by the petitioner. All encroachments in the tenement were to be removed with police protection, the TNSCB added. Recording the same, the bench gave the above directive.
