6 fire engines used to douse blaze in Hyderabad

The fire spread rapidly and it took about three hours to douse it.

Hyderabad: A fire engulfed several huts belonging to bamboo workers at Malakunta, Goshamahal. Station fire officer J. Rajkumar said two fire tenders from Gowliguda were rushed to the spot upon receiving an alert at 9.10 am. “As the fire was huge we called four more fire tenders,” he said.

The fire appeared to have been set off by a careless smoker who had thrown a lighted cigarette butt in the area which is strewn with bamboo.The fire spread rapidly and it took about three hours to douse it, A total of 55 huts were burnt, Mr Rajkumar said.

District fire officer Srinivas Reddy said, “The place is congested and there is no space between huts. We adopted a strategy to prevent spread of the fire.” This helped save about 150 other huts.
