KOCHI: The construction of the 6-lakh-sq-ft Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) coming up in 12 acres of land at Kalamassery is progressing as per schedule.
Out of a total 779 piles required, 744 have been completed while the foundation work will be over by May 15.
In the initial phase, the earthwork and allied roads, including site clearance, excavation and levelling, back filling, retaining walls and laying of interlock paver tiles were completed by February 20. A pond developed at the site as part of rain water harvesting has the capacity to hold 50 lakh litres of water. Test results revealed that the water is of good quality and potable.
Earthwork and allied roadwork were awarded to M/s Crescent Contractors for Rs. 3.52 crore and civil work to M/s P and C Projects Pvt. Ltd for Rs. 87.14 crore.
The building work will be completed in two years and final integration of all the equipment will take another six months.
The project is expected to be commissioned by December 2020. According to officials of INKEL, which is in charge of the work, the tenders for electrical work, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and lifts will be called without delay.
KIIFB has accorded sanction for the development of phase-1 for Rs. 384.34 crore, of which Rs. 224.59 crore is for infrastructure and Rs. 159.75 crore for equipment, IT & furniture. The CCRC will have 50,000 sq-m of built-up space in four blocks.
