Chennai: A petrol bomb was hurled at the house of a DMK functionary in Vandalur in the early hours on Thursday.

According to police, the incident came to light around 3 am when the former village panchayat president M.P. Jeganathan (57) and the DMK functionary heard the neighbours trying to put out the fire.

He immediately alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and conducted preliminary inquiries. The police confirmed that it was a petrol bomb. The CCTV footage shows three men on a two-wheeler waiting outside the house around 1:30 am and then leaving the place in a few minutes.

In one hour after they left, a motorcycle-borne person threw a petrol-filled bottle with an ignited wick on his Innova(car) parked in the garage. No one was injured but the car was completely burnt.

The DMK functionary resides in a two-storey building along with his family members in Manivakkam in Vandalur.

According to a police source, the victim was targeted owing to local party politics. "He is very kind and soft-spoken. I don't think anybody would attempt to kill or even threaten him," said his brother Shanmugam, who is also a DMK functionary.

The Vandalur Otteri police have registered a case and said they were going through the CCTV footage recovered from the house to nab the accused.
