Aadhaar not mandatory for marriage registration
Chennai: With the sub-registrars of state registration department baffled over insisting Aadhaar for registration of marriage under Hindu Marriage Act, inspector of registration J. Kumaragurubaran on Wednesday issued a circular directing the sub-registrars to not to insist on Aadhaar number.
A circular dated September 2017 had been creating confusions as a few sub-registrars insisting on compulsory Aadhaar to register marriages.
Although the circular directed officers to consider Aadhaar as one of the photo identity proofs and not as address proof, the insistence of Aadhaar by a few officers has been causing hardships to newly wedded couples. "Sub-registrars may use Aadhaar as one of the identity proof, but it is not compulsory," said a new circular issued on Wednesday.
By the new clarification, couples do not have to provide Aadhaar cards if they have other photo identity cards. Further, easing the process of marriage registration, Kumaragurubaran also directed the sub-registrars to not to seek death certificates of parents annulling the previous order of compulsory attachment of death certificates. According to the new circular, couples may have to write 'Late' before parents' name. The circular also has insisted the sub-registrars to carefully scrutinize name and address of the applicants.
Kumaragurubaran also clarified that the consent of parents is not mandatory to register the marriages. "It was never insisted," he said when asked about the issue, which has been causing confusion after some miscreants spread the false news through social media.
