AIADMK, DMK to announce bypoll candidates today

The PWA constituencies CPM, CPI and VCK are still discussing whether to contest in the byelections or support the DMK in the bypoll.

Chennai: The DMK will wait for one more day and announce its candidate for the RK Nagar bypoll on Wednesday when the ruling AIADMK's governing council is meeting to finalise its candidate.

DMK working president M.K. Stalin told reporters on Tuesday that his party nominee would be announced on Wednesday after consultations with party president M. Karunanidhi. Stalin who held a meeting of alliance parties told reporters that the campaign strategy was discussed with the allies.

Shimla Muthuchozhan, who contested in the 2016 Assembly elections against Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and legal wing secretary R.Girirajan who contested in 2014 Parliament elections in North Chennai are among the prominent DMK functionaries who had sought tickets for RK Nagar.

But, the DMK could also throw surprises as it wants to field a powerful candidate following reports that AIADMK deputy general secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran could enter the fray.

Former IPS officer Thilagavathy has sought ticket to contest as the candidate of AIADMK breakaway group headed by former Chief Minister O. Pannerselvam.

The AIADMK governing council will meet on Wednesday to decide on the party candidate for RK Nagar and the decision will be be announced on the same day.

The PWA constituencies CPM, CPI and VCK are still discussing whether to contest in the byelections or support the DMK in the bypoll.

Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan said he would discuss his party's poll strategy with senior leaders and local functionaries in RK Nagar.
