Kozhikode: Drive discovers bad water in juice shops
KOZHIKODE: An inspection by the food safety department on Monday found that eateries and juice shops in the Kozhikode corporation limits use polluted water. “We have warned the joints against the use of polluted water,” food safety assistant commissioner CT Anil Kumar, said, adding that a sum of nearly Rs 50,000 was collected as fine from the shops.
The week-long state-wide inspection drive was launched in the wake of complaints by the public on the use of contaminated water and ammonia-sprayed ice in food and juices across the state.
The first phase of the inspection will cover the use of water, ice, milk and other food products in juice shops and hotels in the city. “We have received reports of increasing instances of waterborne diseases from the department of health,” Mr Anil Kumar said.
“That is one of the major reasons why we have gone for the inspection.” The main targets of the department are juice shops and makeshift eateries as a lot of such joints have come up this summer, he said.
