Kerala: Plus 2 maths paper leaves many in tears

A senior official said the CBSE was yet to get complaints but has a traditional mechanism to address such issues.

KOCHI/KOZHIKODE: The mathematics paper of the CBSE class XII proved too tough for the students on Monday with many coming out of the exam hall in tears. The students and teachers were of the opinion that the paper was tough and not on the expected pattern.

“The questions were totally different from what we practised in previous years’ question papers. The allotted three hours was not sufficient to solve them. Hence I had to leave out a few,” said Achyut Jayagopal of Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrik- kakara.

According to Kevin Jacob Kurien of Viswajyothi Public School, Angamaly, though the questions were based on the concepts learnt, they were of the higher order. “Most of the questions were indirect. An average student can hope for just a pass. Seventy percent questions were tough. We are now anxious about getting admission for Kerala engineering where Plus- Two marks are also considered,” said Kevin.

A teacher said that the paper was slightly better than last year when out of syllabus questions made things difficult for the students. “Still the difficulty level was very high. Students aspiring to get full marks too were in trouble as the last part of some of the questions was difficult. They all are depressed,” said the teacher adding this will affect the students' prospects in NIT admission after IIT-JEE Main where Class XII marks are taken into consideration.

In the opinion of Anuja Sebastian, student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kozhikode, whoever prepared the question paper was not fit for the task. “Under such circumstances I would suggest students to opt for a state board or ICSE syllabus. He can now we aspire for Kerala engineering admission,” she asked. Suma Ramakrishnan of Providence School, Kozhikode, said the CBSE was playing with the future of students. “The questions that came from text were asked indirectly,” she said.

All-Kerala CBSE School Management Association president T.P. M. Ibrahim Khan said that the association will petition the CBSE chairman to make the valuation liberal and give moderation to the students. “The questions should not be prepared by people coming from IIMs to make things difficult for students. Last year out-of-syllabus question shocked the students and we petitioned the CBSE which compensated in valuation. This year also we are expecting the same,” he said.

Mr Ibrahim Khan said that the maths marks are crucial in the admission of Kerala engineering. “CBSE students are competing with Kerala syllabus students who are given marks liberally. So the CBSE students will be the losers. Such a situation cannot be allowed,” he said.
