THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The candidates who do not file their expenditure statements will be disqualified for three years by the Election Commission of India. In Kerala, 101 such candidates in the previous elections, including those of fringe parties like the BSP and namesake independents, were disqualified, but the disqualification period of 27 persons is ending on Tuesday.
Hence, 74 others will not be able to contest this time. They were disqualified under section 10A of the Representation of People Act. The Election Commission had sent the list of the disqualified persons to the returning officers to ensure that they do not file nominations in the coming elections.
The candidates in about 40 constituencies were among those disqualified. They include Rameshan who contested against Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala at Harippad, Kunhiraman who fought against CPM’s K. Kunhiraman at Udma, four from Devikulam and three each from Peerumade, Idukki, Thirurangadi and Poonjar.
