Osmania General Hospital's emergency theatre in ICU
Hyderabad: An emergency operation theatre at the Osmania General Hospital has been closed as chips have been falling from the ceiling.
The operation theatre is in the new building, which is 30 years old. On March 12, when doctors were operating on a patient, chips from the ceiling started falling and it became difficult to do the surgery.
A senior doctor on condition of anonymity said, “There are 12 operation theatres and one of them had to be shut down as it was becoming difficult. There was fear of dust, debris and also small particles that were falling on instruments every now and then.”
Senior doctors state that due to non-maintenance the building is deteriorating. The building is supposed to be maintained by the TS Medical and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
A senior doctor added, “Maintenance was a big issue in OGH. The TMSDIC engineers carry out assessments, but the works are not on time. The quality of works also suffers as the job is not done properly.”
OGH was sanctioned Rs 30 crore for repairs but repairs have been carried out only at the in-patient block and hostel area. A senior doctor said, “A sum of Rs 5 crore was spent on these two blocks. There are many areas that require urgent attention, but the hospital administration is not able to present the cases properly to the agency. It is only when it deteriorates that it has to be shut down . It will take three months to get these works done.”
