Cubbon Park turns into battleground over parking

Walkers, environmentalists protest two-wheeler parking in city's lung space.

Bengaluru: Cubbon Park has now become a battleground for environmentalists, daily walkers and the horticulture department, over the allowing of vehicular parking inside this lung space of the Central Business District (CBD). Adding to the woes of the motorists a few miscreants have begun using the opportunity to demand parking fees, without offering any receipts.

Since the past few weeks, hundreds of vehicles, especially two-wheelers are being parked inside the Cubbon Park from the HOPCOMS entry side.

According to the daily walkers, the hundreds of bikes parked inside the grounds have raised the pollution levels. “This is the latest addition to the problems haunting Cubbon Park. Parks are considered as the lung spaces of the city. Every day thousands of people visit the park. With bikes being parked inside and vehicles being allowed to ply on the roads inside the park, the enviornmental value of the Park is in great danger,” says Mr. Shekhar Pujari, a walker who visits the park often.

Meanwhile, the Horticulture Department Deputy Director Mahantesh Murgod informed that he would look into the issue. “We will take all action to stop vehicles from parking inside the grounds,” he said.

Parking fee
Many bikers allege that some miscreants are demanding parking fees. "They are not issuing any receipts. They just ask money as a fee for parking. Horticulture department officials say that they have not authorised anyone to collect parking fees,” said another motorist.
