Police use force to disperse anti-CAA protesters in Chennai

Sources said the protesters had come with plans to spend the night and continue their protests.

Chennai: The Chennai Police lathi-charged protesters who had been demonstrating against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) at Washermenpet on Friday evening.

The protesters, including students and activists protesting against the CAA and the impending NRC near Lalagunda street in old washermenpet were lathicharged in order to remove them and clear the area when the demonstrators did not budge.According to sources, at around 2 pm on Friday, hundreds of people, including women and children, turned up for a protest, fully intent on demonstrating for as long as possible. But all of them had to go home at night after the police denied them permission for a long-drawn protest. However, the protesters continued raising slogans against CAA and Modi government.
