LDF yatra begins at state capital

Country facing terror, says CPI gen secy.

THIRUVANANTHAPURM: CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy on Thursday said “Modi Hatao Desh Bachao” is a historic slogan which is also the need of the hour.

Inaugurating the southern leg of LDF’s Kerala Samrakshna Yathra, the CPI general secretary said there was an atmosphere of fear and terror across the country. Under these circumstances if the present dispensation continues for next five years then fascist attacks would grow alarmingly in the country.

Minorities, intellectuals, backward caste, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, women, secular and progressive forces are all living in the shadow of fear.

Tolerance and pluralism, the two important pillars of the country, are being destroyed by the Modi government, More than 40 Muslims and Dalits have been killed across the country in past five years in the name of cow and other sectarian issues. False cases are being registered against dalits who are putting up resistance against fascist attacks, he said.

Mr Reddy said the BJP's economic policies had wreaked havoc with the lives of people. Farmers, workers, employees, women, youth of all sections are in deep distress because of the policies of Modi Government. Demonetisation and GST have broken the backbone of economy.

He attacked Congress and BJP for their opportunistic stand on the Sabarimala issue. The SC judgment is in favour of gender equality and why is the Congress opposing it, he asked. All citizens of this country irrespective of gender, caste, creed are free to visit and pray at any temple.

The CPI leader said the Sabarimala issue was a political fight. The Congress and BJP want to take advantage of the situation harping on religion and belief system.

He said the BJP-led Maharashtra government had implemented the court order allowing entry of women in Shani Shignapur temple and Haji Ali Dargha. But when the LDF government implements the SC verdict on Sabarimala, the BJP comes out on the street to oppose it.

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the BJP government had blocked assistance for rebuilding Kerala. The Centre deprived the state of the assistance offered from foreign countries which could have helped in rebuilding Kerala.

On Sabarimala, the CPM state secretary said the LDF was not worried about the impact of Sabarimala issue.

“If we lose votes for taking stand on gender equality so be it. In this fight, the Left is with the progressive forces and against orthodox sections. We are sure that people will stand by us,” he said.
