Bengaluru: In another eight months, the city will be able to draw 12 MLD of water from now-defunct Thippagondanahalli (T.G. Halli) reservoir, said K.J. George, Bengaluru Development Minister.
T.G. Halli and Hessarghatta were the early sources of drinking water for the city. T G Halli reservoir became defunct in 2010, as the water became unfit for drinking owing to heavy pollution and this increased the burden on Cauvery water.
After laying the foundation stone for the BWSSB's initiative to use Natural Biological System to treat water flowing from the Arkavathy river to Hessarghatta Lake in T.G. Halli reservoir, George said "The project is being taken up at a cost of Rs 11.49 crore, which will fetch 12 MLD of water to the city within eight months."
Hyderabad based Akhil Infrastructure Private Ltd has been awarded contract for the project. The same Natural Biological System is being used in Hyderabad's Hussain Sagar lake.
This initiative will be help purify 85 % of water, . A part of the amount will be spent to fix sensors at various locations to check the pollution levels in the surrounding area, explained a top BWSSB official.
Commenting on a media report that claimed Bengaluru will run out of water like Cape Town in South Africa, he clarified that that there is no need to panic as city's share of water from Cauvery will be augmented by 10 TMC after the completion of Cauvery 5th Stage.
