Pollution low on Less Traffic Day: Karnataka Transport Minister HM Revanna

Bengaluru: State Transport Minister H.M. Revanna has stated that there was a 26% fall in the city’s pollution levels on Less Traffic Day, which was observed for the first time on February 11.

BMTC reported an increase in sale of daily pass, which was sold at a discount on that day. "On Less Traffic Day, 66,836 passes were sold as opposed to 52,170 on the previous Sunday. Jayanagar saw the highest reduction in pollution (33%).”

He, however, regretted that government officials came for the Less Traffic Day inauguration in their private cars. “This won't happen next month," he assured.

"BMTC has introduced pink seats in 39 buses, as a part of Indira Sarige, for women passengers. It will be extended to 65 other old buses, after receiving their fitness certificates," he said.

Budget demands
As for the forthcoming state budget he said, “I have proposed that all students should receive free BMTC passes. Right now, physically challenged, senior citizens, students from SC/ST communities avail free pass benefits. I want to extend the same to all students until higher secondary."

The ministry has also proposed four hi-tech truck terminals, costing Rs 21 crore each, in the budget. The aim is to reduce road accidents caused by sleep deprived lorry drivers travelling long distances.

Another proposal is Motor Vehicle Tax exemption for NWKRTC and NEKRTC buses for the next five years and financial support for those who want to convert autos and two wheelers to electric vehicles.
