Chennai: A day after a woman software professional was waylaid by an armed gang, police secured a 20-year-old youth in connection with the case. The woman’s two-wheeler, stolen by the gang, led cops to Surya of Semmenchery.
P. Lavanya, a native of Vijayawada, was working in Global Infotech in Navalur on Rajiv Gandhi Salai. She was found unconscious on a deserted stretch along Thalambur-Perumbakkam road during the early hours of Tuesday.
The gang, police said fled with the woman’s 3 sovereign gold chain, her iPhone and the scooter she was riding before dumping her amidst the bushes by the roadside.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, around midnight, police found her scooter - a blue Honda Activa - abandoned near a Tasmac bar in Semmenchery.
Pallikaranai police who were investigating the case identified the bike owned by Lavanya. Based on investigations, police secured local rowdy Surya and are investigating him.
“He has been detained on suspicion. Investigations are still underway,” a senior police officer said. Five special teams headed by St Thomas Mount Deputy Commissioner have been formed to trace the suspects. Police suspect that more than three persons may have been involved in the attack.
Victim in critical condition
Techie Lavanya is still in a critical condition at the private hospital in Perumbakkam. Her sister Nisha Jaiganesh reportedly told the investigators that she was not aware that her sister was visiting her. “We have to wait until the victim becomes conscious to find out why she took the stretch,” a police officer said.
Lavanya lived in a rented accommodation in Thalambur, a few kilometres away from her office. Her family members have arrived from Andhra Pradesh. Further investigations are on.
The woman, police said, left the office around 2 am on Tuesday after her shift and was riding along the Thalambur-Perumbakkam road.
The gang who had trailed her scooter had attacked her from behind leading to her fall. They then took her to the deserted stretch of the road and took her valuables including her scooter and fled.
Pallikaranai police had registered cases under at least five sections of IPC including 307 (attempt to murder) and are investigating.
