ICU admissions continue to rise

Hyderabad: Three more persons lost their lives to Covid-19 in Telangana on Friday even as the number of patients joining hospitals and ending up on oxygen support or in ICUs continued to rise amid continuing surge in cases.

Around 2,000 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals. The numbers of hospital admissions rose by 771 in the first 14 days of this year. The figure stood at 1,229 on January 1 while it is 2,000 as on Friday, representing 3.35 per cent of 22,984 new cases reported in the state since the beginning of this year. The number of hospitalizations, at present, is more than three times the projected one per cent of all Covid cases which health department officials had predicted would require hospital care.

In what could be a sign of things to come over the next few weeks, patients getting admitted to ICUs and oxygen supported beds continued to rise.

The count of Covid patients in ICUs rose from 455 on Thursday to 492 on Friday, while the number of Covid patients requiring oxygen support, as per the state health department data, rose from 654 to 809 in a single day. The number of Covid hit people requiring basic hospital care and on regular beds increased from 564 on Thursday to 699 on Friday. In all, 327 more patients found themselves in hospitals.

On Friday, the health department reported 2,398 more Covid cases with one out of every 24 tests for which results were available from the 68,525 tests that were conducted on Friday. Results of 10,118 tests are still awaited.

Meanwhile, the department said that the GHMC limits reported 1,233 new cases, followed by 192 in Ranga Reddy district and 191 in the Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
