Kerala: More elderly are being abandoned

The society should have more concern for such elderly souls, who are being mistreated.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Women’s Commission on Monday observed that the cases of elderly abandonment are on the rise in the state. In the post-adalat press briefing, the members of the Women’s Commission said that many elderly people are being abandoned by their children after getting the property transferred in their name.

Member of the Commission E.M. Radha shared the story of the 80-year-old lady who came for the adalat seeking justice and safety from her own family. The society should have more concern for such elderly souls, who are being mistreated.

Another story is the sad plight of the 90-year-old lady who gave all her property to her three sons hoping that they will take care of her. The commission had directed her family to give 10 percent of her property to their mother. If not complied, the Commission will take steps to seize and hand over the entire property back to the mother.

The adalath settled 30 of the 170 cases and 127 cases were postponed to the next adalath.
