Thiruvananthapuram: Netizens rally behind Sreejith
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hundreds of netizens rallied in support of Sreejith who was protesting in front of secretariat demanding CBI probe into the custodial death of his brother.
The banners flashed the title 'Pramukanallatha Sreejithinoppam' (with non-celebrity Sreejith).
Actor Tovino Thomas also arrived here in support of Mr Sreejith and signed a petition to governor seeking CBI probe into the case.
The protesters started to pour in on Sunday morning itself with various Facebook fraternities organising protests multiple times throughout the day.
"The protests are apolitical, and so is our involvement in it," said Tovino.
"There should be a valid reason if someone has decided he will strike indefinitely until justice is delivered. We are with Sreejith."
Several people from places as far as Kasargod and Kannur had arrived here to show solidarity with him.
"We are not saying this was a murder, but there is a mystery in Sreejev's custodial death. The people involved in the case are policemen, and it's fair for his brother to demand a CBI probe. I have seen videos of this man lying alone on the road in heavy rains and thought I must drop in," said Ansar Mohammed, hailing from Cheemeni, Kasargod.
Sreejith's mother Ramani Sreedharan said that crowd made her feel that justice will be delivered.
Politicians like former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran also arrived in solidarity.
Sreejeev was allegedly in an affair with a girl and taken into custody a day before her marriage at the behest of her relative who was a policeman.
Later, he was admitted to a hospital after consumption of poison on May 19, 2014, and injury marks were also found on his body.
His father Sreedharan, a toddy shop worker, died two decades back also after allegedly being thrashed by policemen.
‘It was indeed custodial death’
Kochi: Meanwhile the former police complaint authority chairman Justice Narayana Kurup has reiterated that Sreejiv's custodial death.
He said the evidence examined by the authority has pointed at torture leading to the death.
He also said authorities had not initiated any action against responsible officers. Sreejith, the brother of Sreejiv, has completed 765 days of sit-in before the secretariat demanding to bring culprits to book.
Justice Kurup during his tenure as chairman had rejected the police theory of suicide and ordered for a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to his dependents and appropriate punishment for culprits. The state government has promised to request a CBI investigation anew.
