Cholera afflicted migrant referred to Kottayam MCH

Dr Sreedevi said that the person afflicted with cholera belonged to a group of 35 migrant labourers living together in Kochi.

KOCHI: One migrant labourer afflicted with cholera which is supposed have been eradicated from the state has been referred from the Ernakulam Government Medical College to Kottayam Government Medical College for expert treatment and dialysis.

Babu (37) hailing from West Bengal who resides at Pookkattupady had come to EMC for treatment a few days ago. “He now requires dialysis and the nephrologist at EMC referred him to the Kottayam medical college,” said an official at the hospital. It is said that Babu had come to Pookkattupady in search of job two weeks ago. He carried symptoms upon arrival in the state.

He had first consulted doctors at the district hospital at Aluva who referred them to the EMC. The health department in the district has swung into action after that and has taken preventive measures as well.

“He carried it on his arrival in the state. The district surveillance officer has taken steps to prevent the spread of the disease which is water-borne,” said Dr Vivek Kumar, Additional District Medical officer.

District surveillance officer Dr Sreedevi said that the person afflicted with cholera belonged to a group of 35 migrant labourers living together. “The rest of them have been given prophylactic tablets and all other steps have been taken to prevent spread of the disease. Reports of another migrant labourer contracting the disease are not true,” she said.
