Chengannur legislator K K Ramachandran Nair passes away
ALAPPUZHA: Chengannur legislator K.K. Ramachandran Nair died on Sunday morning at a private hospital in Chennai following liver ailments.
The 65-year-old first-time legislator breathed his last at 4 am in Apollo Hospital. His body will be bought to his home at Chengannur from Thiruvananthapuram where it will be open for public to pay obeisance. The cremation will be held at 5 pm at his house on Monday.
His body will be placed at the Area Committee Office, Chengannur at 2 pm on Monday.
Born in 1953 at Ala, Chengannur as son of Karunakaran Nair and Bharathi Amma, Bhaskara Vilasam, Ramachandran Nair was one of the widely-accepted, soft-mannered leaders from the CPM in Alappuzha. Known as one of the staunch loyalists of veteran Marxist leader V.S. Achuthanandan, Ramachandran had always stood by him despite being criticised by party leadership on many occasions, even during ticket distribution in the last Assembly election. He never went public against the party leadership earning him the reputation of being a responsible and acceptable party leader among cadres.
“He served as Chengannur area secretary twice. Nair was instrumental in mobilising party cadres even during the heights of factionalism in the party. He was a key player who helped to bring in a solution when a rebellion broke out in Chengannur area committee a couple of years ago,” one of his colleagues from Chengannur recalled.
He joined the party as a student at NSS College, Pandalam from where he took his Masters in Economics. Later in 1978, he completed a degree in law from the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. Nair practiced as an advocate initially at the Chengannur Court and he went on to become the Bar Association president, Chengannur. He was serving as the Chengannur area committee member.
Though he was not interested in parliamentary politics, he contested twice from Chengannur to legislative assembly, which is a relatively tough constituency for the LDF. He failed on debut in 2001 to Shobhana George of the UDF by a margin of 1,465 votes. On his return in 2016, he won the constituency in a triangular contest and defeated P.C Vishnunath of the Congress by a margin of 7,983 votes.
PWD minister G. Sudhakaran said that it was three months ago that his disease was detected and his departure was a big loss for the CPM and the state. Former MLA Vishnunath said that he was a big lover of arts and music. He was a enthusiast of classical music and served as president of a local-level cultural outfit ‘Sargavedi’.
“He was also a voracious reader. He led the project for reviving Varattar River and his demise is a big loss to Chengannur," said Shobhana George.
CPM district secretary Saji Cherian said that the Alappuzha district committee meeting of CPM is on in Kayamkulam and they will take a decision on his funeral time soon. His body will be brought to Chengannur on Sunday evening, Saji said. He was survived by wife, Ponnumani, a home maker and son Prasanth, an engineer.
His body will be placed at the Area Committee Office, Chengannur at 2 pm on Monday.
