Bengaluru: Thousands throng Gangadhareshwara temple
BENGALURU: Makara Sankranti reminds us of the astronomical wonder and architectural significance of Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple in the city.
This harvest festival also marks the first day when the sun enters the zodiac sign 'Makar' (Capricorn). The sunlight passes through the horns of Nandi and falls on the Shivalinga in the temple, built by Kempegowda, the city's founder.
Each year, thousands of devotees throng to witness this phenomenon in Gavipura, which lasts for an hour.
The event makes a reference to the sun god (Surya), symbolizing a shift in the Hindu calendar and end of the winter season.
The mystery of the 16th century monolithic stone temple with its exact alignment allowing for the sun to shine its light on the Shivalinga, continues to fascinate the public.
