Ex-cop seeks court's intervention in illegal sale of temple property

The former police inspector claimed the temple properties were sold illegally at throw away prices.

Chennai: News of idols belonging to ancient temples either smuggled or sold and temple properties being illegally occupied and tanks disappearing in Tamil Nadu, is now passé. The property of Agastheeswarar Temple in Chennai's prime Nungambakkam area has allegedly been sold, claims a former police inspector who moved the Madras high court for appropriate action.

In his writ petition filed before the Madras High Court, J. Mohanraj of Mylapore, said he took VRS after serving as Inspector of police and since then he has been fighting to get the truth behind Rajiv Gandhi assassination.

"I am a poor pensioner and after voluntary retirement, I am espousing the ideology of my father late Nellai Jebamani, freedom fighter, Gandhian and MISA detenu and former MLA," he said.

He claimed the temple properties were sold illegally at throw away prices and he had petitioned the HR & CE commissioner on March 21, 2016, to cancel the illegal sale to takeover the possession of temple lands. "Though action was assured, the fate of the legal opinion even after three years is not known," Mr. Mohanraj said. He sought the court to issue a writ of mandamus or any other appropriate writ directing the respondent to consider and act on his representation made on March 21, 2016, regarding legal opinion on illegally sold temple property of Lord Agatheshwarar temple and pass such orders as the court may deem fit and thereby render justice.
