Telangana Cabinet sub-panel checks universities quota rule

The Cabinet had recently approved a Bill to allow private universities in the state.

Hyderabad: The Cabinet sub-committee on private universities elicited the views of senior officials and the law department about the reservations quota in its first meeting held here on Tuesday.

The panel comprising ministers Kadiam Srihari, K.T. Rama Rao, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, G. Jagdish Reddy and C. Laxma Reddy sought information about UGC rules, policy being implemented in different states for establishing private varsities, process of admissions, fee structure for various courses etc.

The committee members felt that many institutions would make a beeline to establish institutions in Hyderabad because of the brand image of the city.

Education department officials said there are 246 private varsities across the country. The panel took legal advice on permissions to new varsities and reservations scenario in different states.

The sub-committee is expected to meet again on December 20 after which it will submit its report to the government. The Cabinet had recently approved a Bill to allow private universities in the state.
