Karnataka: Improve quality of govt schools, says Mohandas Pai

This policy will ensure that even government-run schools will impart quality education to all the students.

Bengaluru: Both union and state governments must see to it that all government employees will admit their children in government schools. This policy will ensure that even government-run schools will impart quality education to all the students.

A day after Union MHRD Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that the union government will soon announce a national education policy panel, former Infosys CFO T.V. Mohandas Pai told Deccan Chronicle that there exists an urgent need of an action plan to improve the quality of education offered in the government schools, as tens of lakhs of students are join these schools and colleges run every year.

Access and quality: Pai expressed the opinion that the new education policy must focus on broader perspectives, including access to all, and good quality in education. "The new policy should encourage more players in the education sector. A regulatory authority and mechanism should be evolved to monitor the education sector. There should not be any road blocks for setting up of schools and colleges,” he said.

“Quality education without any barriers is the need of the hour. Everyone who wants to study must get access to the course of his choice. Another important issue is a national scholarship programme to ensure that the needy will get financial support,” he explained.

Foreign institutes: Pai informed that the new education policy must allow the foreign universities and colleges to set up their branches in India. “Nearly 5-6 lakh young Indian students are traveling to foreign countries to pursue education. If foreign universities were allowed to start their branches in the country, we can save up to $10-15 billion. Foreign universities will also bring qualitative changes in the Indian education system,” he elaborated.

Pai also informed that he is expecting implementation of the new policy at the earliest. “NDA government will have just two years to implement the new policy. Any policy set forth by the government should be implemented within a time frame,” he suggested.
