Bengaluru: Cyclone Vardah that devastated large parts of Tamil Nadu on Monday left Bengaluru pulling out its woolies as rain lashed the city through the day on Tuesday, with the city receiving a record 60.8 mm rainfall, making it the highest 24-hour rainfall in the last decade! Gottigere in Bommanahalli zone alone received 78.5 mm, making it the highest within the city.
The maximum temperature dipped to 19.4 degrees Celsius, which was 7 degrees below the normal, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 17.7 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees below the norm, said Met department officials.
They warned that overcast and rainy conditions will prevail over the next two days. "There is a well-marked low pressure area over South interior Karnataka and north-interior Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Coastal Karnataka might experience widespread rainfall, while interior parts will have scattered showers," said Mr Sundar M. Metri, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru.
Cyclone effect: Traffic snarls across Bengaluru
Traffic was affected across the city on Tuesday as over a dozen tree branches fell and several roads were flooded as Cyclone Vardah brought heavy rains over the city throughout the night on Monday and on Tuesday.
Tree branches fell in Indiranagar, J.C. Nagar and Sanjay Nagar causing traffic snarls on main thoroughfares and cross roads. As several roads were flooded, traffic congestion was reported in several Central Business District areas.
A few roads had knee deep waters, slowing down the traffic, the police said.
Three vehicles crashed into the median on Hosur Road as the stretch was wet and slippery, said the Electronic City Traffic police.
“Wherever there were oil spills, vehicles skidded and crashed. Fortunately there were no casualties. Visibility was also a problem on the stretch as streetlights installed under the express highway are not maintained properly. Most of the lights are non-functional,” the police said.
