Start tree census in two weeks: Karnataka High Court tells BBMP

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the state government and BBMP to start the tree census Bengaluru city within two weeks and warned them of contempt proceedings if no action taken.

The court was upset that the authorities failed to start on the tree census despite a series of directions since June.

The court observed that the state government and the Palike have failed to carry out the tree census for the last 43 years, though it is mandatory under the Karnataka Preservation of Trees Act. It went on to say that the conduct of the authorities shows that they have no intention of implementing the provisions of the Act.
