Bengaluru: Brave woman puts pervert behind bars in two hours

Encourages women to go after fiends, says crime non-bailable.

Bengaluru: For all the women who put up with sexual perverts and ignore if fearing consequences, here is an example of a young woman who taught a fiend a lesson by ensuring that he is behind bars. The brave woman is new to the city and came from Kolkata only four months ago to pursue her studies.

The pervert, a 32-year-old, followed her her near Pattandur Agrahara Lake, behind the ITPL campus, where she had gone on an assignment. The accused, Kumar, who is a resident of Pattandur, was vulgar, flashed before her and made lewd gestures, all in broad daylight.

The woman refused to feel victimised and headed straight to the Whitefield police station to file a complaint. She answered all their questions, showed them the place where the incident occurred and gave a proper description of the accused, which helped the police catch him within two hours.

Talking to Deccan Chronicle, the woman praised the police for helping her and catching the culprit immediately after the complaint. “I was very happy to see the accused behind bars within an hour or two. Good job done by the police. The police should be like this throughout the country,” she said.

Whitefield police station Inspector Narendra Kumar said, “The complaint by the woman made all the difference. Majority of women neglect such incidents which encourages the accused to commit bigger crimes.”

The woman said, “I was near the lake to do a report on issues surrounding it. I had almost finished my work and was waiting for my source, when this pervert, soon after making an eye contact, started flashing at me and making lewd gestures.

I video recorded it for 30-45 seconds. I thought I should get out of that place and came to the main road. He followed me there too and as I was waiting for the cab, he stood on the other side of the road and started making gestures indicating that I should go with him. I video recorded that too. I left that place soon after.”

She said, “A lot of people don’t know that these are criminal offences, are non-bailable and perpetrators can be put behind bars.”

Advising women not to take such incidents lying down, she said, “Don’t keep quiet... It’s not okay to look the other way and ignore it thinking that it is not safe for you. It happens to women on a daily basis, and it is not the first time it has happened to me. If you ignore such incidents, you will be doing a disservice to society.”

She said that it helps to know the legal system and makes women more independent.

The police produced the accused, Kumar, before court, which sent him to judicial custody.

The police said, “This pervert would have committed a bigger crime if he was not arrested by us at this stage. Now he will have the fear of police action. Women should help the police in containing such crimes by speaking up against harassment, eve-teasing and other incidents.”
