Online festiveal season sales amplify stress, risk factors

Hyderabad: The festive season sales lead people to be more careless when shopping online and also leads to clicking on an unfamiliar email because it offered savings on their festive shopping.

According to a report by McAfee, the computer security software company, consumers are very concerned about finding the lowest price even if that means potentially jeopardising their online security by using a website they are unfamiliar with

Online shoppers will risk sharing their personal credentials for a good deal during the festive season.

Attractive pricing options along with the convenience of home delivery are driving people to shop online to find the perfect gift.

The survey finds that the festive season tends to amplify financial stress in a family or individual owing to the increased shopping activity. About 46 per cent of respondents felt a bit stressed during this season while 31 per cent of respondents said that they feel a lot of stress during the festive season.

McAfee commissioned MSI-ACI to conduct a survey of 1,017 adults in India between the ages of 18 and 55 in October 2018.

The survey also noted that the online buying habits of Indian shoppers are evolving as awareness around shopping frauds is increasing. About 74 per cent of respondents do their research and ensure the website is genuine before clicking on an unfamiliar link or email. People tend to check their bank statements more often during the festive season and will not make a purchase over an unsecure Wi-Fi connection.

Venkat Krishnapur, vice president, engineering, and managing director, McAfee India, said, “Cyber-attackers are well aware that people do not pay much attention to their online activities during this time and use this to their advantage. Consumers should be vigilant of the deals and offers that appear too good to be true online and take proper steps to ensure they can enjoy a safe festive season.”
