KIAL have category 9 level security systems making it one of the safest airports in the country.
The fire station will have two buildings (East and West) at the two ends of the runway. Out of the four ARFF vehicles, three are to be deployed in flight arrival and departure sections, while one is to be kept as standby. The standby vehicle along with crew and one ambulance will be stationed in the West fire station.
Officials said that in case of an emergency, the maximum response time of these firefighting vehicles is two minutes. Taking safety precautions one step further, the fire station also has a 24x7 hotline with the Mattannur fire station for quick response. Training has been provided to the local firemen in order to familiarise them with aircraft firefighting tools. About 2 lakh litres of water will be stored in the tanks within the fire station. Over 5,400 litres of the best firefighting foam available is kept ready for use, along with a reserve stock of 9,000 litres, officials added.
