Kochi: The High Court on Tuesday registered a suo motu case in connection with the violence at Sabarimala that occurred when the temple was opened for the Chithira Aattadivasam.
A division bench registered the case based on the report submitted by Sabarimala Special Commissioner and district judge P. Manoj and said that a proper decision has to be taken on the report.
The court has sent notices to the state government and the devaswom board and posted the case for further hearing to next Monday.
The commissioner has given a detailed account of the violence and skirmishes in the hill shrine during the two days, including attacks against women at the Nadapandal which resulted in a 52-year-old woman nearly fainting in the wake of heckling by a mob. The other points mentioned include RSS leader Valsan Thillenkary and many other activists scaling the top of the 18 steps without the customary Irumudikettu, complaints about the deficiencies in police deployment and lack of facilities for the pilgrims.
It also said the situation prevailing at Sabarimala was explosive having the potential to create a disaster in the forthcoming Mandala and Makaravilakku season. The report highlighted the dangers posed by the people assembling in the temple and places such as Pampa, Nilakkal and other places with the open threat of preventing women in the age group of 10-50 from entering the temple as per the Supreme Court verdict.
