High alert in Puducherry for cyclonic storm

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Tuesday convened a meeting of senior administration officials to review cyclone preparedness.

PUDUCHERRY: The territorial administration has put its machinery on high alert as cyclonic storm Gaja is expected to make its landfall across the Tamil Nadu coast between Cuddalore and Pamban on November 15, bringing heavy rainfall.

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Tuesday convened a meeting of senior administration officials to review cyclone preparedness.

“The territorial administration and concerned departments are well prepared. Fishermen were advised not to venture into sea. Messages have been sent to those engaged in deep sea fishing asking them to return to shore. Relief camps would be opened and the health department has been directed to store all emergency medicines,” said the Chief Minister after the meeting.

“Two teams of the National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) arrived here to tackle any eventuality. One team has been deployed in the Karaikal region of the Union Territory while the other is in Puducherry,” he added.

The administration has also opened control rooms to continuously monitor the situation.
