Bengaluru: Laptop spews smoke, sparks mid-air scare

The crew immediately shifted the passengers to other seats and as per the safety protocol doused the smoke with the fire extinguisher.

Bengaluru: In a mid-air scare, a laptop, aboard an Indigo Air flight, en route to Bengaluru from Thiruvanathpuram was found spewing smoke, on Saturday. After passengers complained of a burning smell to the cabin crew, they opened the hand luggage compartment and found the laptop in a black bag emanating smoke and giving out sparks. The crew immediately shifted the passengers to other seats and as per the safety protocol doused the smoke with the fire extinguisher and placed the bag containing the laptop in a bucket filled with water in the toilet.

A spokesperson from Indigo Air told Deccan Chronicle, "Fortunately, it was not a major incident and the flight (6E-445) carrying the passengers had a normal landing at the Kempegowda International Airport. The passengers too alighted safely. The matter has been taken up by the government authorities concerned, who will investigate it further." Sources said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is examining the feasibility of a ban on personal electronic devices (PED) in the hand baggage area.
