Hyderabad: Last day to pay with old notes

GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said that 67,396 citizens had paid their property tax in the last three days.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has received about Rs 112 crore towards property tax, LRS fee and trade license renewals since the demonetisation of high value currency notes on November 8.

Following the announcement by the GHMC that it would be receiving old currency towards bill payments, the civic body received Rs 54 crore on Friday, Rs 12 crore on Saturday and Rs 36 crore on Sunday till reports came in.

On Sunday, MeeSeva centres and GHMC counters saw heavy rush with citizens paying fees for the land regularisation scheme and about Rs 26 crore being collected.

GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said that 67,396 citizens had paid their property tax in the last three days and that the counters that are accepting old currency would function till 9 pm on Monday.

Monday is the last day to pay a slew of fees and charges to the GHMC, the water, sewerage and power utilities and other cess and charges using the demonetised notes.

“We are expecting more response on Monday and are taking all necessary steps to handle the rush,” he said.

The response from motorists to avail the offer of paying pending challans with old '500 and '1,000 notes was not huge. Less than 1,500 challans, worth Rs 2 lakh, were paid on Sunday by motorists at various MeeSeva and the traffic police control room counter.

Mee Seva commissioner G.T. Venkateswara Rao said 15,000 power bill transactions were made at their counters, but the total amount was not available. “About 2,800 citizens utilised our counters for paying water bills and about 1,820 for paying GHMC property tax,” he said.

Discom officials said that there was no rush of consumers at the electricity offices on Sunday.
