March against rape accused

The protestors demanded action against the accused as per Canon law.

Kochi: Joint Christian Council on Saturday organised a protest march to Pastoral Orientation Centre, headquarters of Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council, demanding removal of rape-accused bishops and probe into their private assets.

“After the arrest of tainted bishop Franco Mulakkal, the KCBC openly supported him and put the complainant nun under pressure. It is an unpardonable mistake on the part of KCBC that eminent persons like bishop Mathew Arackal visited Franco in prison and issued pastoral letter supporting him,” said Lalan Tharakan, Joint Christian Council president.

The protestors demanded action against the accused as per Canon law.

Polachan Puthuppara, Indulekha Joseph, George Joseph, Stanly Paulose and Joseph Velivil also addressed the gathering.

Meanwhile, various laity organisations like JCC and Kerala Catholic Church Reformation Movement (KCRM) have started organising awareness progrmames for the laity on the importance of enforcing Church Act. The programme launched in Ernakulam on Saturday will be expanded to other districts, said Prof Joseph Varghese of KCRM during a press conference.
