Hyderabad metro work throws traffic out of gear

The diversions left techies fuming on the very first day on Friday.

Hyderabad: Traffic in Hitec City has been gridlocked due to Metro Rail construction activity. Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) had taken permission to divert traffic for three months to build a facility for reversing trains at its Hitec City station.

According to HMRL, not the building, the train reversal facility now will delay the Ameerpet-Hitec City line by another three months.

The diversions left techies fuming on the very first day on Friday.

Responding to complaints on Twitter, caretaker minister K.T. Rama Rao advised DGP M. Mahendar Reddy and HMRL managing director N.V.S. Reddy to oversee the traffic situation.

Following this, top officials of the GHMC, L&THMRL, police and traffic police met on Saturday and decided to carry out immediate road improvement works and worked out different alternatives to route vehicles.

A large number of mobile barricades will be supplied to Cyberabad traffic police to channelise traffic. L&T Metro will provide 40 additional traffic marshals. The road will be widened at certain places in the next few days. Some identified electrical, signal and water pipes will be shifted immediately.

A statement after the meeting said trial runs would be organised to see how effective the measures were and finetune traffic flow arrangements.

Techies, meanwhile, were advised by IT associations to carpool. Society of Cybe-rabad Security Council (SCSC) sent an email to all IT companies to facilitate pick and drop for cabs inside the premises.
