Coimbatore civic body launches major eviction drive

Residents will be relocated to TNSCB tenements before October 21.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) has embarked on an exercise to identify illegally constructed homes and re-locate affected residents.

A source from the civic body said that more than 3,500 tenements in 24 localities around the city have been identified as on Saturday. “Residents will be relocated to TNSCB tenements before October 21. The corporation has already began ear-marking homes and has issued notices to the respective residents to initiate the process of relocating to new homes,” an official from the civic body said.

Home owners from Peelamedu, Anna nagar, south side of Rangavilas mill who have constructed their homes on encroached land have received eviction notices. In the next phase 279 tenements on the VVK Menon road besides 117 encroachments in Seeranaickenpalayam and GR colony will be evicted, the source said. Power supply to the homes stands disconnected. As many as 35 homes located in Medavar colony and another 66 houses from Muthannan Kulam have been demolished as on Saturday. The civic body has also erected warning boards in the ear-marked areas urging the residents of homes constructed on encroached lands to vacate and move on to the houses allotted to them by TNSCB.
